Jesse slumped down against the base of an old oak. Her breathing ragged, eyes half closed. Unwillingly her heart pounded in her chest pumping the blood around her body at an amazing rate; and she hadn’t even got that far from the village. Nearby a branch snapped. She froze, instantly trapped, the seconds slowing to an impossible crawl. Slowly, tenderly even, she rose to her feet, a hand clutching the cool metal pendant around her neck. The leaves rustled in the breeze around her, masking all other sounds. Then with a sickening crunch another branch was crushed under thick heavy set boots. Pulling her cloak roughly around her
